I can’t believe I had the immense privilege to listen to Cornel West speak at my university! He was an amazing and powerful speaker, the way his voice fluctuates and his hand movements are catchy and addictive. I really hope I have another opportunity to see him again, and maybe one day to even be lucky enough to meet him!
He spoke about many amazing things though, and one of them is the immense respect he has for minority communities to resort to peaceful methods to end racism, referring back to when desegregation movements could have easily turned to terroristic methods, but instead wanted to keep their “moral integrity and spiritual capacity” in tact. I paraphrase, but that was one of my favourite lines.
I also loved his mention of the famous Malcolm X quote; “You can’t drive a knife into a man’s back nine inches, pull it out six inches, and call it progress.” He really wanted to spotlight the fact that there is still a long way to go before we really end discrimination faced by all kinds of minorities, whether it is sexual, racial, or based upon orientation.
I think I nearly stood up and applauded him a few times when he made it a point to mention the objectification of women in the media not one, but three or four times. It is great hearing a discourse originally aimed at racism directed towards other kinds of discrimination as well. It’s also fantastic hearing him mention those with different sexual orientations. He managed to say so much in less than an hour, it was amazing.
Definitely keep an eye out for Cornel West in towns near you, he is a fantastic speaker and a great human being.
